Review: Fox Goggles 2009

Come see Fox's new range of 2009 Main MX Goggles.

Image

Inside we have a triple layer of moisture wicking foam to dab your brow with and keep that salty water from going into your mince pies. Lenses are quality: Oakleys rebranded lexan anti-scratch resistant and anti-fog means no more misting up at the winter races and uplifts! Also they should last longer than your average lense, just don't use this as an excuse to abuse them. They will eventually scratch. Worth noting also is they come with tear-off posts as standard.
Outside we have what they call an "O Matter Frame", not a clue what that means, something to do with two urethanes that make the frame flexible and impact resistant. We do know they fit mint into a range of the lids from THE, TLD,Giro, Bell and of course Fox. Yet still offer a huge window so you can see those rocks and roots coming thick and fast. Plenty of vents in there as well to help stop that fogging up we all hate. The nose area has softening ribs which are designed to eliminate nasal pressure and take the weight of the goggle and hour helmet off the top of your hooter.

The Carbon DH Fork is Back: Manitou Dorado 2009

The new Dorado has some features in common with the last generation of Dorado: an inverted design, carbon legs, integrated stanchion protection and the absence of an arch to connect the two legs. The new fork, while similar to the naked eye is a departure in a few significant ways. To begin with it's sprung on air rather than coil - bringing the weight down to an impressive 2902 grams. Manitou has always been masterful at damping technology and this fork continues that tradition with TPC + compression damping, an open-bath, double tube rebound damper and hydraulic bottom-out and top-out circuits.

Review: Empire Cycles AP-1

Image

Empire is a partnership between two riders, Chris Williams and Craig Robertson (of Ride-On fame), who together have years of combined motorbike and mountain bike competition experience.
What is it that makes this bike different from the competition?
First of all, and most immediately obvious with the AP-1, is that it is not produced using traditional manufacturing techniques.

Image

Instead, the frame is produced using precision sand casting. Now to many this may seem like an odd choice but it is not new technology, having been used in bikes for years, albeit those with engines, and so is tried and tested. the advantage of casting is that you can place material exactly where it’s needed. Despite a minimum thickness of approximately 2.5mm, you are able to create the exact shape required, with the material placed where it is most needed and without the risk of overly thin material in high stress areas that can become a problem when using extrusions or hydro forming. That is because changes in shape will usually be accompanied by a thinning of the wall as the material is in effect being stretched during the process. If that thinning occurs at a critical point like the headtube junction, then it can lead to the area being more susceptible to damage. There are of course other features which set this frame apart. Using the now almost standard fit of a zero stack headset (Cane Creek Double XC comes spec’d on all frames) inside a 1.5” headtube means that the front is kept nice and low. A 65 degree head angle then keeps things steady. This was based around the current Boxxer which has the lowest height of virtually all 8” travel forks as well as the least offset so if the bike feels stable with that then there is plenty of margin for adjustment when using other forks. The bike also has a wheelbase with 20mm adjustment inbuilt to tailor the bike a little to rider preference as well as course requirements...

Review: 2 Stages Bikes

Featuring the unique twin-shock design on all three of their bikes, 2stage bikes cater for Downhill, Freeride and the monster market of All Mountain which is sweeping the mountain bike scene at the moment. Unlike other twin-shock bikes, the 2stage system is designed around efficiency. The first shock is your small bump shock, and the secondary shock is for big hits. But that’s not all.

The configuration of the suspension design is essentially a single pivot with another one on top. The lower pivot is tamed by an idler wheel, which means when pedalling the lower shock is locked out, effectively making the bike a short travel rig. You really notice this when pedalling hard, a common thing in UK downhilling. The secondary shock kicks in on bigger hits, but there is no noticeable transition between the two - a sign of great design. The other big thing is how well balanced the bike feels. The rearward axle path follows the fork’s natural action, making the bike want to lunge forward on square edge hits.
